This book hooked me from the very first page I read. Heartwarming and entertaining, Mark Perretta weaves the subtleties of each character into an amazing story. There are so many little nuances that, if you pay attention, connect characters and themes.

     When my career as a teacher began at Canton Central Catholic High School, little did I realize the impact my students would have on my life. I went into the profession thinking just the opposite; they were the ones that needed me. But I quickly realized to make a difference in the world and the lives I touched, I had to acquire something more.  As it turned out, my students would provide the profound ingredients needed for shaping the teacher and, ultimately, the person I would become.
     When I first met Jason in 1992, I certainly had no comprehension of the impact he would make on my life or that his story would stay with me...until now.

​     His story is meant to honor veterans everywhere, and one that can be continually retold, albeit with a multitude of other names.  My heart goes out to all families of military men and women and the sacrifices both continually make.  It is because of those men and women who serve their country with discipline, duty and honor that enable “us” to live the lives we want.  To put your life on the line for brothers and sisters, for people you will never know, to pay the ultimate price for your country? 
     Understanding the hearts of heroes is not an easy thing.  I hope I have captured a piece of them within this story.
